There is set to be an unprecedented level of traffic on the UK roads this summer due to drivers planning in excess of 29 million staycations, according to the RAC.

With holidaymakers setting their eyes on a holiday in the UK and racking up additional miles – it makes sense to consider vehicle breakdown cover.

Why is vehicle breakdown important?

Unlike car insurance, vehicle breakdown cover is not a legal requirement. However, it can save you a small fortune if your vehicle breaks down, and if you’re en route to your holiday destination it can even help to get you there.

What cover is out there?

So, what cover is out there? Not all policies are built equally, so be sure to check your policy wordings to make sure that it’s right for you.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance is the nuts and bolts of a vehicle breakdown policy. They will either provide a temporary or permanent repair to get you on your way. If the provider is unable to repair the vehicle at the roadside they will tow your vehicle to a garage for repair.

The recovery destination of your vehicle could be a local garage or a destination chosen by them.

Home Rescue

This is sometimes missing from some leading providers. If your policy has this then it provides cover if your vehicle breaks down at your home. It’s important to note that the cover here could vary, some will offer the same kind of assistance as roadside assistance.

If you’re wondering whether your current policy has this then look for ‘Home start’ or ‘Home rescue’.

Onward Travel

Some policies have cover for onward travel. This is where the provider will help the driver continue their journey. Not all policies come with this so it’s worth checking your wording.

You might have the choice of one of the following options. Depending on availability and cover limits.

  • Hire car
  • Alternative transport cover
  • Overnight accommodations
  • Misfuelling

If you put the incorrect fuel in by mistake then some breakdown policies will send help, free of charge. Some insurance companies will include misfuelling in their comprehensive car cover. So it’s worth checking.

European Cover

This could include all of the above but with different cover limits

  • Roadside assistance in Europe
  • Onward Travel in Europe
  • Alternative transport
  • Additional accommodation expenses
  • Getting your vehicle home
  • Vehicle break-in emergency repairs
  • Replacement driver

Tips

Wherever you get your vehicle breakdown cover, check the following:

  • What the cover limits are
  • Keep their details on a keychain or in your wallet
  • If there are any excesses
