As the seasons change, so do our home needs. Autumn can take its toll on your home; your property could be overdue some maintenance to allow it to adapt to the colder months. If you take action now then you’ll be able to relax into the cosy nights with a sense of comfort and achievement!

Here are 6 things you can do to prepare before the season is upon us.

Do a roof check – You don’t necessarily need to go up on the roof to check – unless it has been a while since it’s been inspected. Do so from the ground and have a look for any loose or damaged tiles.

Clean the gutters – Depending on your surroundings you may need to do this more often. Don’t ‘leaf’ it for another day, sort it now either professionally or yourself to prevent damage to your gutters and leaks in your property.

Check for drafts – Look for and seal up any drafts that you notice. This could lower your heating bill and reduce your carbon footprint, a win for the wallet and a win for the environment.

Clean the fireplace – If you use your fireplace then be sure to clean it beforehand, if unsure how to do this then get a professional in to do it for you.

Check your heating – If it’s been a while since you had your central heating serviced then it might be time. In the summer months, the heating goes unused which can cause problems. A professional will be able to check for any faults as well as for carbon monoxide leakages.

Declutter – A new season is a good opportunity to declutter and make way for more of the things that bring you happiness. Make room for the wellies by putting those sandals to one side.

Most insurance policies will not cover you for resultant damage caused by not maintaining your property. Insurance is for uncertain events, not for wear and tear. By getting on and doing a little work now you could save yourself a headache later down the road. If you plan on doing some renovations be sure to let your insurance company know.
